Trondhjem's Pie & Ice Cream Social 2016

Thanks for tuning in to another one of my Social poems! I encourage you to read the lead comment below for an opportunity that you may want to participate in.  In fact, I hope you DO participate ... at least 25 of you!

Trondhjem’s Pie & Ice Cream Social 2016

Stop here on red. Green light. Now, go, go, GO
To Trondhjem Lutheran Church where fellowship is aglow.
The Pie & Ice Cream Social begins at 5.
On September 18th, we’ll be as a bustling beehive.

The kitchen will serve up Linda’s sloppy joes.
As for dessert, I think few will oppose
A celebration of pies and fireworks of flavor,
The tricky choice being of which pie to savor?

Might you want apple, peach or heavenly cherry?
Chocolate, non-fruit or a meringue-topped fairy?
There will be an array of options quite vast
To ensure that we enjoy a tasty repast.

Be sure to check out the silent auction upstairs.
Which items will catch you unawares?
Not to be ignored is our buy-and-take sale
Where baked goods and other homemade foods prevail.

WELCA is raffling a quilt that’s king-sized
Featuring warm colors and a plush-backed surprise.
Donated by Mona with tickets a dollar apiece,
Buy more than one, so for your chances, increase.

Proceeds from the Social will for Haiti help fund
A birthing center and bin homes. It’s a good sort of stunned
For those at GoServ Global who deliver hope
And spread God’s love. They request bars of soap.

Please come on 9/18 in sunshine or rain
To a fond place amidst fields of grain.
We at Trondhjem await you to welcome you here,
But for now have a blessed huzzah and a cheer!

  1. To get right to it, I have 25 QUILT RAFFLE TICKETS. I have no luck, so decided, as part of my quilt raffle donation, I will give 25 others a chance at a quilt. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of it, but it's king-sized with a plush-back. Gender-neutral. All YOU have to do is post a comment. One comment per raffle ticket. So, if you're really on top of it, you could comment 25 times and snag all the tickets. This will be open until I've designated all the tickets OR Sept. 16, whichever happens first. I do have a few parameters.

1: Your comment MUST be related to the post. You can comment on any post; it is not limited to this post.

2: Sorry to exclude anyone, but if we don't know each other, you may wish to refrain from participating, as I'll need to know your first/last name and a phone number to write on the raffle ticket. Additionally, if you do win, I will NOT mail the quilt, but I'd drive it to you or meet you halfway (within a reasonable distance).

3: Anything related to the quilt raffle (e.g. extra tickets, getting a picture) will be posted on this post only. So check back often or sign up for notifications on this post! I will post a final comment on Sept. 19 or 20 with the results, though the winner would be notified right away!

  2. Lisa,
Your poem is exquisite. It makes my mind race from all the fascinating things being sold at the silent auction upstairs to Linda's delicious sloppy joes and the array of homemade pies downstairs - pies to make a king drool. And then there's the raffle for the king-sized quilt that would look so lovely on my bed and, when all is said and done, the proceeds going to benefit the beautiful people of Haiti, equipping them with a birthing center and bin homes. I look forward to attending my fifth Pie & Ice Cream Social at Trondhjem on September 18th. Wouldn't miss it for the world!

  3. Soap. We buy soap in colors that coordinate with our bathroom towels, guest soaps that look pretty sitting on our bathroom sinks, soaps that make us smell good and, yes, even soap that keeps us clean. We keep a stash of soap in the bathroom and one in the kitchen so we always have enough. We don't think twice about having all the soap we need on hand for any use or occasion. The people of Haiti don't have the luxury of having even one bar of soap in their tiny households. Therefore, the people at GoServ Global who spread hope and God's love to the people of Haiti have a simple request: bars of soap. So please purchase a couple of extra bars this week and bring them to the Pie & Ice Cream Social at Trondhjem on September 18th. Just one bar of soap will put a smile on so many faces.

    1. JoAnn, you say it so well. Bar soap is not something we'd ever consider a precious commodity, yet it is an item that is too often lacking amongst those that GoServ Global serves every day. Let us all consider all of the soaps that we've accumulated from hotel rooms alone. Granted, those are not full-size bars, but even they are so often plentiful. Unfortunately, that is not the case in Haiti. For those able to attend the Pie & Ice Cream Social, I would be thrilled if you'd bring along a bar of soap or two. Pull an extra out of your 8- or 10-bar package of Irish Spring or Dove or whichever you use. It's easy for us to get more from Walmart or Walgreens, Sam's Club or Costco, but there is no ease of such convenience for our friends in Haiti. Thanks in advance for your generosity!

  5. Love it Lisa - you have beautiful ways to pain the scene with your words.
Thought I don't eat meat anymore, my mouth is watering with your line of
"Linda's Sloppy Joes" Miss you friend!!

  6. If anyone happens to bring a pie involving chocolate, I call dibs on the entire pie! ;)

Also, I will be hoarding all of the lefse and donuts from the bake sale upstairs! :)

    1. Or if there are rutabaga bars upstairs, I will buy those too! Ha!

    2. Ha, indeed! I expect you will have serious competition should you attempt to hoard all of the lefse and donuts. Someone (me) may even challenge you to a duel, though instead of rapiers or pistols (or wands, if you're thinking Harry Potter), we would choose an item from the Silent Auction. Course, that may mean we'd battle each other using lovely, homemade table runners. Hm, I might have to rethink this one ...

    3. Not sure how I'd feel about eating a rutabaga bar. If you feel like creating one, I'm sure we'd all like a post about how it turns out! :-)

    4. I'm going to be looking for a rutabaga pie at the Social tomorrow. Sure hope someone brings one!

  7. Thank you to all who participated by commenting, emailing me or simply taking the time to read the poem. Your positivity and support are so appreciated, and I say that on behalf of all of Trondhjem's congregants as well!

There was a quilt raffle winner declared. I'm sorry to say that no one whom I wrote out tickets for received the quilt. However, the winner is a member of Trondhjem, and she is 'still amazed' that she won. (And no, I wasn't the winner, either; I only wish!)

    Thanks again! And cheers!

You have a book or post-related comment on your mind? Wonderful! Your comments are welcome, but whether you are a regular or guest Rutabaga, I expect you to keep your comments clean and respectable. :-)
