Rutabaga’s Free Book Contest: #Unmasked@Home Edition

How do you feel about a free book?

   2020 continues to be a year of turmoil. Since reading is my kind of happy (and escape and sanity-grounder), I am hosting my third Free Book Contest and second contest for this year.

1.)    Between now and up to 11:59 p.m. CST on December 31, 2020, be the person to accumulate the most points by leaving comments on my blog. The comment must relate to the blog post. You can leave more than one comment on the same post as long as it’s related, whether it’s an original comment or a reply.

2.)    WATCH THOSE POINTS! Again, I’m using a points system for this contest. Participants will receive:

A.)  5 points for any question or comment on THIS post;

B.)  4 points for any question or comment on any 2020 post;

C.)  3 points for any question or comment on any post prior to the year 2020;

D.)  6 points for any question or comment left on ANY Trondhjem-related poems posts (Hint: The “Rutabagian Search” bar may prove helpful.);

E.)   BONUS points for questions that may pop up on this post. The first correct answer will receive 5 points, then 4 and so on down to 1 point if five or more correctly answer. Answers must be submitted within a week after the question is published on THIS post. So check back at least once a week!

   Friendly reminders:

1.)    Be civil. Freedom of speech and opinion is important, but rude language and mean words are not. Always be better than that.

2.)    Use the same name every time you comment. If you post as “Mulan” the first time, post as “Mulan” each subsequent time.

   For the winner:

1.)    The book you choose can be any book that has been featured in a single book post or a compilation post or seen in a Positive Page-turner’s Challenge picture. Exception: If the book you’re most interested in is not the first in a series, and you’d like to start at the beginning, I would get you the first book instead.

2.)    If the book has both a hardcover and paperback version, I will choose the less costly of the two. This is really only important if the winner is particular about book formats.

3.)    I apologize for any inconvenience, but books will be sent to U.S. addresses only. (Exception: My youngest brother, though I’d be very surprised if he would comment to win!)

May I interest anyone in a free book?

   Suffice it to say that 2020 hasn’t been meeting anyone’s expectations. The top of the year looked so promising, but we’ve all long since wished there was a RESET button we could push. During this unprecedented time that’s brought stressors that most (or all) have never experienced before, I want to throw something fun in the ring. Hence, my second Free Book Contest.

1.)    Between now and the end of May, be the person to accumulate the most points by leaving comments on my blog. The comment must relate to the blog post. You can leave more than one comment on the same post as long as it’s related, whether it’s an original comment or a reply/follow-up to a previous question/comment.

2.)   I am trying out a points system for this contest. Participants will receive:

A.)  4 points for any question or comment on THIS post;

B.)  3 points for any question or comment on any 2020 post;

C.)  2 points for any question or comment on any post prior to the year 2020;

D.) 5 points for any question or comment left on my “Origin of The Reading Rutabaga” post. (Hint: The “Rutabagian Search” bar may prove helpful.)

Do you want a free book?

            During a season where we’re rushing to purchase Christmas gifts, cook turkeys, bake hams and make millions of cookies, I want to celebrate the end of a decade/start of a new one with, naturally, books. The rules are simple.

1.)    Between now and December 31, 2019, be the person to leave the most comments on any post on my blog. Catch: The comment must relate to the blog post. You cannot, for example, say “Hello” to me on 50 posts. But if you find you have questions about this contest, you could, as another example, ask them on this post and receive credit for a comment. If you ask a different post-related question later on for the same post, that will count as a second comment.

2.)   Be civil. If you’re commenting on a specific book or author that you found lacking, that is fine, as it is your opinion, but do not be rude about it. There’s plenty of negativity in the world as it is.

            Helpful notes:

1.)    Remember to use the same name every time you comment. Even if I know you go by “Lisa” and “Rutabaga” and “Mulan,” each of those names will still, by my tracking, be three separate participants.

2.)   Every week, I will leave a comment on this post giving a weekly update on the standings. Yes, it’s a contest, a small competition, but it’s a friendly one. If you are determined to leave the most comments, I want you to have the best chance that you can.

3.)   Don’t discount your chances just because you may be in second or even third place. If the contest is fiercer than I’m anticipating, I wouldn’t be opposed to having two or three book winners.

            For the winner(s):

1.)    The book you choose MUST be one that’s in a 2019 post on my blog. It can be a book that’s been reviewed or it can be one found in any of my Page-turner’s Challenges pictures. Exception: If the book chosen is, say, the second in a series, I will get you the first book if you haven’t yet read it and want to start at the beginning of the series.

2.)   If the book chosen has both a hardcover and paperback version, I will choose the less costly of the two. So, if you’re someone who is particular about hardback copies versus paperback copies (or vice versa), please bear this in mind.

3.)   Remember that this contest runs through the very end of this year. I plan to have more posts, including compilation posts, and any of those books shown there would also count as options for the winner’s choosing.

4.)   I apologize for any inconvenience, but books will be mailed to U.S. addresses only. (I don’t think this will affect anyone I anticipate will participate, but I’m covering my bases.)
